middle income country offers significant opportunities for growth and innovation that must be closely supported.
At the same time major development challenges loom. Some 40% percent of the population lives below the national poverty line, climate change is a frontal threat and there are vast inequalities between regions.
The UN agencies in Indonesia have a wealth of expertise, knowledge and resources to help address these challenges and support the government and people of Indonesia to achieve lasting social and economic development. Attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) plays a central role in this process.
The recently signed Jakarta Commitment: Aid for Development Effectiveness; Indonesia’s Road Map to 2014 has given new impetus to our work, and that of our partners. This Commitment is an integral part of our planning for the next UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF). It also underpins joint UN programming and sustainability initiatives.
In this context, the UN RCO supports my efforts and those of UN agencies to promote strategic coordination, joint programming and high-quality policy advice to the Indonesian government at the national and sub-national level, as well as other stakeholders. UN agencies have contributed to greater UN system coherency by making the UN RCO an integrated office and providing staffing and other valuable support. Today, commitments to a common UN approach continue to grow through the ongoing establishment of a regional presence for the UN RCO in Aceh, Papua and NTT. Each region will soon have dedicated webpages on this site.
